Sofia University presented the FLeD project at INTED2024, held in Valencia, Spain, from March 4th to 6th, 2024. INTED is one of the largest international education conferences, where over 600 experts, lecturers, researchers, technologists, and professionals from more than 78 countries meet to share their knowledge on teaching and learning methodologies and educational innovations. It is consistently ranked among the most successful education conferences in Europe.
At the INTED2024 conference, Sofia University presented a paper and a poster entitled “Incorporation of flipped classrooms in teaching students with special educational needs to enhance inclusive education in higher education” within the context of the FLeD project, which emphasises flexible learning through flipped experiences using digital technologies.
The paper, which is published in the Conference proceedings, discusses the positive effect of the flipped classroom strategy on inclusive education in higher education institutions. This approach is well-suited to teaching all students, regardless of their differences, and is a particularly good opportunity for students with special educational needs (SEN). The poster focuses on three main groups of students—hearing impaired, dyslexic, and visually impaired—as these are the most numerous groups in higher education.
The paper provides detailed instructions for educators on designing a flipped classroom that accommodates students with these needs. It emphasises the importance of lecturers understanding the specific needs and preferences of their SEN learners and applying a personalised approach when using the flipped classroom method.
